PART12:I let a homeless man with a leg brace sleep on our couch for one night because my son couldn’t stop looking at him shivering outside….

Part 12 — Why Harlow Wanted Nolan
My mother’s words barely registered.
“Your son is the key.”
I looked toward the stairs.
Nolan was upstairs with Detective Ruiz.
“Harlow wants Nolan?”
My mother nodded.
“Why?”
“Because your father left something inside his bloodline.”
I stared at her.
“What does that even mean?”
“Your father created the trust so it could only be transferred to his direct descendants.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t explain Nolan.”
“It does if the final inheritance was designed to pass from you to your child.”
Wesley suddenly understood.
“The biometric authorization.”
My mother nodded.
“Exactly.”
I felt sick.

“You’re telling me Nolan can access the trust?”
“Not yet.”
“Then why is Harlow after him?”
“Because Harlow believes he can force the transfer.”
My mother’s voice trembled.
“He thinks your father left a final authorization device.”
“Where?”
She looked at the floor.
“Under the house.”
A crash came from upstairs.
Ruiz shouted,
“Stay back!”
Then Harlow’s voice echoed through the house.
“Audrey!”
My mother grabbed my wrist.
“There isn’t much time.”
Wesley moved toward the hidden basement wall.
“Where’s the entrance?”
My mother pointed toward an old furnace.
“Behind it.”
Wesley and Marcus pushed the furnace aside.
A steel panel appeared.
Marcus stared at it.
“I remember this.”
“You’ve been here before?” I asked.
“Once.”
He pulled out a small tool.
The panel opened.

Behind it was a narrow tunnel.
Wesley looked at me.
“Get your mother inside.”
“What about Nolan?”
“Ruiz will protect him.”
A loud bang shook the house.
Then silence.
Too much silence.
I looked toward the stairs.
“Mom?”
She grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.”
“That’s my son.”
“I know.”
We entered the tunnel.
Marcus followed.
Wesley stayed behind for a moment.
Then he slammed the panel shut.
We heard footsteps above us.
“Harlow!”
Wesley’s voice echoed.
“Looking for someone?”
A gunshot followed.
I screamed.
“Wesley!”
My mother pulled me forward.
“Keep moving!”
We reached the end of the tunnel.
There was a small steel room.
Inside stood an old machine.
It looked like a safe crossed with a computer.
A single screen glowed.
My mother’s hands began shaking.
“Your father called it the inheritance vault.”
I stepped toward it.
The screen suddenly activated.
WELCOME, AUDREY CARTER.
I stared at my name.
Then another message appeared.
DIRECT DESCENDANT CONFIRMED.
NOLAN CARTER — SECONDARY HEIR.
I felt tears in my eyes.
“My father planned all this?”
My mother nodded.
“He knew Harlow would never stop.”
The machine opened.
Inside was a small black device.
I picked it up.
“What is it?”
“The final authorization key.”
A red light appeared.
Then a countdown started.
10:00
I looked at my mother.
“What happens in ten minutes?”
She didn’t answer.
“Mom?”
She finally whispered,

“The trust transfers.”
“To me?”
“No.”
She looked at Nolan’s name on the screen.
“To him.”
My heart stopped.
“But he’s nine.”
“Your father designed it that way.”
“Why?”
“So Harlow could never control it through you.”
I stared at the countdown.
09:21.
Then the tunnel behind us shook.
Someone had found the entrance.
Marcus turned toward the door.
“They’re coming.”
My mother grabbed my shoulders.
“Audrey, listen to me.”
“What?”
“If Harlow gets that device, he can destroy everything.”
“How?”
“Because the device doesn’t just control the trust.”
She paused.
“It contains the evidence your father spent his life collecting.”
The door began to bend inward.
Marcus raised his weapon.
“We need another way out.”
My mother pointed toward the back wall.
“There is one.”
We rushed toward it.
She pressed her hand against a small symbol.
A hidden door opened.
Beyond it was a narrow staircase leading outside.
I looked back at the vault.
The countdown continued.
07:42.

We started climbing.
Then a voice echoed from the tunnel.
“Stop!”
Harlow.
I turned.
He stood at the bottom of the stairs.
His gun was raised.
And beside him was Nolan.
My son was crying.
Harlow held him tightly.
“Give me the device,” he said.
“Or your son dies.”
I froze.
My mother whispered,
“Audrey, don’t give it to him.”
Harlow smiled.
“Choose carefully.”
The countdown on the device continued.
06:59.
And for the first time, I realized my father hadn’t created this final test for me.
He had created it for the mother I had become.
