PART 8—A Week Before She Died, My Grandmother Pulled Me Aside and Shared a Secret She Claimed No One Else Knew.

PART 8 — THE SECRET SHE HID FROM ME
Daniel stared at the man standing in the doorway.
“She is hiding from me?”
The man nodded.
“For years.”
“Why?”

“Because she believes that if you find her, they will find you.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then take me to her.”
His father immediately said, “Daniel, wait.”
Daniel turned.
“I’ve waited my entire life.”

His father looked at him with tears in his eyes.
“You don’t understand what you’re walking into.”
“My mother is alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew.”

“Yes.”
“And you still let me believe she was dead.”
His father lowered his head.
“I thought keeping you ignorant would keep you alive.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Well, Grandma had a different plan.”
Richard looked at Daniel.

“Your grandmother knew the truth would eventually find you.”
“Then why all the tests?”
“Because she needed to know whether you would use the truth to destroy the family or save it.”
Daniel looked at the black ledger.

“And what did she expect me to do?”
“Choose.”

“Choose what?”
“Justice or revenge.”
Before Daniel could answer, Michael suddenly shouted,
“Everybody stop!”
They turned toward him.

Michael was staring at the photograph Richard had brought.
“There’s something wrong.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.

“What?”
Michael pointed at the background.
“Look behind them.”
Daniel leaned closer.
There was a farmhouse.
But not the farmhouse they knew.
An older building.
And above the door was a number.
17.
Daniel’s heart began racing.
“That’s the old farmhouse.”
Richard nodded.
“It was demolished thirty years ago.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
“What?”
“My father used to talk about that place.”
Daniel stared at him.
“What did he say?”
Michael hesitated.
“He said there was a room underneath it.”
Daniel looked at his father.
His father suddenly looked frightened.
“Not another room.”
Daniel stepped toward him.
“You know about it.”
“I know enough.”
“Then tell me.”
His father shook his head.
“Your grandfather wasn’t the only person hiding things.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Who else?”
His father looked at Richard.
Richard said nothing.
Then Michael whispered,
“My father.”
Everyone turned toward him.
Michael’s voice trembled.
“My father left me something before he died.”
Daniel asked,
“What?”
“A message.”
“What message?”
Michael reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I never understood it.”
Daniel took it.
There were only six words.
WHEN DANIEL COMES HOME, OPEN 17.
Daniel stared at the message.
“Why didn’t you show me this before?”
Michael looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“My father.”
Daniel unfolded the paper completely.
Something fell out.
A small photograph.
Daniel picked it up.
It showed a little boy.
Himself.
Standing in front of the old farmhouse.
But Daniel had never seen the photograph before.
On the back was another message.
“I watched you grow.”
Daniel’s hands began shaking.
“That was my mother.”
His father looked at the photograph.
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“Because your mother wasn’t there that day.”
Daniel turned the photograph over again.
There was a date.
June 14, 2004.
Daniel’s father went pale.
“What?”
“That was three months before your mother disappeared.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Then who took this?”
Nobody answered.
Richard slowly walked toward the door.
“We need to leave.”
Daniel blocked him.
“Not until I know.”
“Know what?”
“Who was watching me.”
Richard looked at him.
Then he said,
“Your mother.”
Daniel froze.
“She watched me?”
“Yes.”
“But you said she couldn’t come near me.”
“She didn’t.”
“Then how?”
Richard pointed toward the photograph.
“Someone else was taking the photographs for her.”
Daniel looked at the image again.
“Who?”
Richard didn’t answer.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Everyone turned.
A woman’s voice echoed through the underground passage.
“Daniel.”
He knew the voice.
His heart nearly stopped.
“Mom?”
The footsteps stopped.
Then she spoke again.
“Don’t come any closer.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Please.”
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“I’ve waited twenty years.”
“I know.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“I know.”
“You watched me grow up.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you come home?”
Silence.
Then she answered.
“Because I was the reason your grandmother died.”
Daniel’s father closed his eyes.
Daniel whispered,
“No.”
His mother continued.
“Your grandmother didn’t die because she knew too much.”
A pause.
“She died because she refused to tell them where I was.”
Daniel felt his knees weaken.
“Who are they?”
His mother’s voice became quieter.
“The people your grandfather worked for.”
Richard suddenly grabbed the doorframe.
“They found us.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Richard pointed upward.
“We have minutes.”
His mother shouted from the hallway,
“Daniel, take the ledger and run!”
Daniel grabbed it.
“Come with me!”
“I can’t.”
“Mom!”
“If I leave this place, they’ll follow me to you.”
“I don’t care!”
“I do.”
Daniel rushed toward the hallway.
His father grabbed him.
“Daniel!”
He fought back.
“Let me go!”
His mother shouted,
“Daniel, don’t trust your father!”
Everything stopped.
Daniel slowly turned.
His father looked devastated.
His mother continued,
“He wasn’t the man who saved me.”
Daniel stared at his father.
“Then who was?”
A long silence followed.
Finally, his mother whispered,
“Your grandfather.”
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“What?”
“He didn’t die when they told you he did.”
Richard stepped backward.
Michael whispered,
“That’s impossible.”
His mother answered,
“Your grandfather is alive.”
Then the lights went out again.
A gunshot exploded somewhere above them.
And in the darkness, Daniel heard a man’s voice laugh.
“Hello, grandson.”
